Welding inspector: coordinating and performing inspections

A welding inspector is responsible for coordinating and conducting independent inspections on all welding activities. Throughout the project, the welding inspector is the expert. A welding inspector is appointed by the company or the customer. In the preparation phase, the welding inspector draws up the quality plans and the inspection and test plan (ITP), in which the requirements for the product and the way this will be secured are laid down. The welding inspector can be found in every company that makes or has made welding connections.

What does a welding inspector do?

The welding inspector checks all topics included in the quality plans. This includes testing compliance and this is discussed and reported. The quality pick-ups and take-downs of destructive testing (DO) and non-destructive testing (NDT) are organized, coordinated and reported by the welding inspector. The main activities are:

  • Interpret drawings and specifications
  • Checking welding method descriptions and welders' certificates
  • Preparation of inspection procedures before, during and after welding
  • The welding inspector works in the quality department of a company, at certifying organizations and as a self-employed person.

What competencies does a welding inspector have

Good craftsmanship requires that the person possess competencies that define the job, the profession. A cobot welder should have:

Communicative
Communicating and instructing personnel, talking to suppliers, reporting verbally and in writing is important. You are tactful and correct.

Structured
Certificates of welding consumables, welding procedures, valid qualifications, work instructions and product traceability should be in order.

Independence
Quality requires independent judgment, without sales objectives. It is good quality or not good quality, there is nothing in between.

What is part of the welding inspector training?

To be able to grow in the profession and have the right competencies, a learning path has been set out for the cobot welder. This consists of welding training, welding courses and workshops.

Growing in the work develops talent, increases craftsmanship, increases appreciation, makes different connections, and finds solutions more quickly.
