NEN-EN-IEC-60974-4: Safety inspection of welding equipment

The IEC 60974-4 is the European standard by which welding equipment must be safely inspected. In order to guarantee safe use of electrical installations as far as possible, this standard, like NEN 3140, prescribes that electrical installations must be inspected periodically. The safety inspection IEC 60974-4 is the right solution for welding equipment! This standard is more comprehensive than the NEN 3140.

Safety inspection of welding equipment

With state-of-the-art equipment we test the electrical safety with regard to earth connections, insulation resistance and the leakage current (difference and touch current, substitute and primary leakage current and leakage current of the welding circuit). The inspection consists of visual inspection, measurements, tests and a test with the safety meter. The findings are recorded in an inspection certificate. In addition, the approved equipment is provided with an inspection sticker, so that it is visible that the machine has been inspected and when the next inspection is needed. We also add the inspection certificate to Our Welding Portal, so you have a clear overview of your welding machines and associated inspection certificates. A message will automatically appear in Our Welding Portal when your machines are due for another safety inspection.

Maintenance before inspection

The NEN-EN-IEC 60974-4 prescribes that the welding machines must be clean and dry before inspection. This means that the machines must be provided with maintenance. According to the standard, this must be done by trained service personnel. Our service technicians are trained every year by our suppliers EWM, Rehm and Hypertherm. They are therefore authorized to carry out inspections, repairs and tests on all makes of welding equipment.

The Elektrolas technicians provide your machines with a maintenance report by means of our 20-point plan. The maintenance reports are loaded into Our Welding Portal so that you have a clear overview of your welding machines and associated maintenance reports.

Safety inspection of welding equipment

NEN IEC 60974-4 is a standard for welding electrical installations. This standard sets out the requirements for the safety, reliability and quality of electrical installations that have been welded. Among other things, the standard describes the requirement for welding procedures, the qualification of the welding workers, inspection and testing requirements and documentation requirements.

NEN 3140 is a Dutch standard that sets rules for working safely with electrical tools. The standard describes the requirements for the subject, construction, use and maintenance of electrical tools, with a view to user safety. The standard applies to all power tools, including welding machines.

It is therefore important to know the difference between NEN IEC 60974-4 and NEN 3140, because NEN 3140 is not a specific standard for welding, but a standard for the safety of electrical tools in general and including welding machines.
